I will let you know about how we did meals with our house o' special needs later on. Even if it takes me a week to get back to this!

"Make your own" nights have been very successful at my house. I have one kid who is specific about what she does and doesn't like, so giving her a choice about what's on her plate avoids a control struggle and complaints. Make your own pizza night is the favorite. Taco bar and pasta bar are also popular. I put the components on the counter, and then everyone constructs their own dish. I like these nights because I feel like it teaches kids how to cook and how to construct your own combination of flavors.

We do sit at the table together, and everyone seems to like sharing about their day. Now that my kids are older, they like to talk about issues and current events too- sometimes we have lively discussions. However, talking together can be added to any part of the day and doesn't have to be paired with food. Some of our best talking is in the car on the way back from school or while I'm cooking in the kitchen.
